How do I know what this guy's intentions are?

Met a guy like a month ago. Hanging out recently. At times I think its potential for more than just hookup, other times he makes me feel like thats what he wants. Havent done anything with the kid yet, but at this point in my life I dont wanna just screw around especially with the wrong ppl. I dont wanna be straight forward n jus ask him because its still kind of early. He does take me out occassionally. He has tried to move things along phsically but I have told him no and he seems to respect that. Its just odd sometimes he seems eager to talk and hangout and other times not so much... what to do?
