How could I have handled this better?

Classic sob story con. I feel bad for the kid and mad at the mom. She might have even fallen down on purpose.. onlookers feel empathy and drop piles of money on them. You did nothing wrong.. technically you were assaulted. By purposely blocking your path and grabbing you, she was in the wrong. Try not to stew on this too much.
